BRASILEM REAIS

From money to everyday life

Eleven scale landmarks and the zero point have illustrative comparisons. Rates of saving are assumptions, not wages or income estimates. Hourly saving uses 8 hours a day, 22 days a month and 12 months a year. Monthly saving uses R$ 1,000. All savings are constant in reference-date reais, without returns.

The same car, nursery and healthcare references recur to make changes in scale visible. Construction equivalences do not represent operating budgets, implementation or services delivered. Family payments hold the September 2026 minimum constant for 12 installments. Whole units and households are rounded down. Each entry below contains its calculation, dated references and limitations.

At monthly salary, benefit and work-budget landmarks, the example compares hypothetical net wealth equal to the amount shown with one reference month. It does not describe the visitor’s actual wealth. Gross salary, conditional benefit caps and work resources retain their distinct labels. An authorized limit does not prove payment or spending.

R$ 0.00 · The break-even point.

Your assets are worth exactly as much as your debts. Zero is the point between negative and positive net wealth.

Calculation

Net wealth = assets − debts = R$ 0.00

Assumptions and limitations

  • Zero net wealth does not mean having no debts or having paid every bill.

R$ 1.00 · The first positive real.

Saving R$ 1 per hour, it would take around 33.4 years to reach the car’s historical reference price.

Calculation

R$ 70,629.18 ÷ (R$ 1.00 × 8 × 22 × 12) ≈ 33.4 years

Assumptions and limitations

  • 8 hours a day, 22 days a month and 12 months a year.
  • Constant savings in reference-date reais, without returns. A purchasing-power comparison, not a financial forecast.
  • Historical offer including IPI tax exemption, discounts and brand incentives. The IPCA adjustment expresses purchasing power without estimating the car’s current price. Registration, insurance and maintenance are excluded.

FIXED EDITION · DOCUMENTARY CUTOFF OCTOBER 28, 2026

Numbers need
context.

This experience places amounts on the same monetary scale. The figures describe different things, identified at each encounter. The population curve uses World Inequality Database (WID) estimates; the stories, named politicians and fortunes are an additional editorial selection.

Monetary reference: September 2026. There are 92 landmarks, including 28 politicians, nine public offices, 12 estimated fortunes and three documented events. The site does not call data APIs during a visit. The common reference is money in Brazilian reais; positions do not represent a moral ranking of people.

The curve represents the adult population

The main curve uses World Inequality Database estimates for Brazil in 2024. There are 100 bars, each representing 1% of the adult population. Height shows the mean net wealth of that interval: assets minus debts. The horizontal axis runs from 0% to 100%, from the least to the most wealth. The line connects interval means; it does not represent individual observations.

The reference population is 155,432,016 adults aged 20 or over. Resources are divided equally between the members of a couple. This is an estimated distribution of adults, not households. The Brazilian data, metadata and variable dictionary document the concepts.

Poor, middle class and rich

The tags are editorial labels for wealth bands: the bottom 50%, the middle 40% and the top 10%. They are not official classifications of poverty or income class. They are anchored to positions on the curve and leave the screen when their section leaves the window.

Why some values are negative

We estimate around 16 million adults with negative net wealth: their debts exceed the value of their assets. We interpolate the zero crossing between the thresholds at the 10th and 11th percentiles, obtaining approximately 10.3%, then multiply by the 2024 adult population. The two observed percentiles bound a range of 15.5 to 17.1 million. This range is not a confidence interval. It is not a count of everyone with debt, every borrower or everyone in default.

The first landmark uses the mean of the 1% with the least wealth, rather than a fictional person or the lowest individual net wealth. The first ten bars have negative means. Since the next interval mixes balances of both signs, this does not contradict the estimate that around 10.3% of adults have negative net wealth.

A window into what lies ahead

The opening shows the whole curve, then zooms into the first 25 percentage points of the population. From there, a window of constant width slides with scrolling, from 0%–25% to 75%–100%, in both directions. The axis preserves actual population percentiles; the 0% to 100% miniature locates the window and cursor within the whole. Bars are clipped by the window without regrouping the data. Direct links to encounters and a reduced motion preference skip the opening animation.

The current amount stays inside the window, and upcoming amounts appear above the chart. The monetary framing depends continuously on the amount reached and the visible section of the curve, preserving a single linear scale throughout the window. The visible monetary range appears below the chart. Text length does not resize the curve area.

The “You are here” marker follows the current amount where it intersects the line of population means. Above the main curve, it continues along the dotted extension of the extreme. It indicates the monetary point reached in the journey, without assigning a personal percentile to the visitor or to the person mentioned in a story.

The scrolling distance is adjusted so that short intervals also show intermediate amounts, with pauses for reading each encounter. It has no fixed conversion from reais to pixels. Within each chart window, heights follow a single linear scale. The opening illustration is conceptual.

The extension of the extreme and the stories

On reaching the 75%–100% window, the final population bar still represents the mean net wealth of the wealthiest 1%. Above it, a green extension grows to the current amount in the journey and shrinks when scrolling back. The dotted line and points mark references in the extreme, with WID means for the top 0.1%, 0.01% and 0.001%, plus 12 identified Forbes fortunes. The extension is not another population mean and does not assign a personal percentile to a fortune. WID groups are nested and must not be added together. Fortunes are individual or family estimates, as indicated in each record. Labels mark values observed within the window, with points at their actual heights; there is no separate panel or artificial top for clipped bars.

The 28 politicians, salaries, work budgets and documented events remain stories and monetary annotations. We do not infer a person's population percentile from assets declared to Brazil's Superior Electoral Court (TSE), or treat a salary or the value of a case as personal wealth. Sources and conditions for all 92 encounters are available in the index and reading version.

WID monetary reference year

The distribution refers to 2024, but monetary values in the source file are in constant 2025 reais, confirmed by the WID price index of 1 for that year. As an editorial convention, we use the mean of the 12 monthly IPCA price index numbers for 2025 (7,300.841667) to express them in September 2026 reais. The factor is approximately 1.05410038. We do not adjust them again from 2024. Evidence, hashes and a reproducible importer accompany the source code.

Inflation adjustment

We use IPCA, IBGE/SIDRA table 1737, variable 2266: original amount × September 2026 index number ÷ reference-month index number. The result is rounded to centavos. IPCA is Brazil's broad consumer price index, published by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE); SIDRA is its statistical database. The adjustment expresses equivalent purchasing power, rather than a revaluation of real estate, shareholdings or investments.

For electoral asset declarations, August of the election year is an explicit editorial convention for inflation adjustment. The TSE source does not provide a uniform valuation date for assets. Files consulted in October 2026 may contain amendments made after August. We do not reconstruct a historical September snapshot. In other cases, we use the documented monetary reference: for example, Forbes fixes valuations at June 30, 2026, despite publication in August.

Amounts referring to months after September 2026 are not incorporated without a new monetary reference date. Documentary status and evidence may be consulted through October 28, 2026.

Declared assets: 28 politicians

Totals were summed from official TSE candidate asset files: 18 records from 2026, eight from 2022 and two from 2024. These are self-declared assets, without subtracting debt or automatically converting them to market value. The latest available declaration is not a current measurement of wealth. The candidacy label identifies the office contested in that election; it does not presume the person holds that office today.

The selection includes more figures from the political right as an editorial choice for this project. Everyone receives the same data treatment. A change in declared assets alone does not prove wrongdoing. Personal identifiers and residential addresses have been excluded from publication. Sources, hashes and checking procedures remain in the project's research archive.

Salaries, benefits and work budgets

The nine public offices use rules applicable to the September 2026 reference. Municipalities and states have their own rules; São Paulo is a specific jurisdiction, not a Brazilian average. Gross salary differs from net pay received.

Personal compensation is presented separately from conditional benefits and work budgets. The staffing budget pays an office's staff; a parliamentary expense allowance covers costs of exercising the mandate. An authorized limit does not prove that the amount was spent. Housing allowances and official accommodation are alternatives in the documented cases.

The “12 months” landmarks multiply a monthly salary by 12; they do not represent total annual compensation or accumulated savings. The thirteenth-month salary, vacation supplement and transition allowance appear separately where documented. The nine offices do not necessarily have the same benefits. Healthcare, official accommodation, transport and other facilities without a verifiable individual amount have not been assigned an invented price. We do not publish a “total salary” that adds together all work budgets.

Landmarks for each office describe rules and limits; they do not claim that every person in the collection received these benefits. Rules on combining payments, pensions and individual payroll composition are not inferred from the salary.

Updates, corrections and reproduction

This is edition 2026.10. Figures remain fixed until an editorial revision: documented corrections, significant changes or a new monetary edition. News and changes in wealth are not published automatically. A revision will preserve encounter identifiers and document what changed.

To check a figure or report a correction, identify the landmark, compare its original amount with the linked document, and record the source and date of the discrepancy. The public edition data is available for download; evidence and research notes accompany the delivered source code.

The project does not use trackers or transmit the value entered in the savings simulation. The calculation runs in the browser, with a constant contribution and no investment returns. It is a mathematical equivalence, not a financial forecast.
